First Flooding Reports in Freeport (Sandy Update #4)

Quick update:

 - We're yet to get seriously inclement weather, like massive thunderstorms.  It's ugly, but not bad.
 - Hurricane Sandy's center itself is still pretty far south; it isn't gonna make an actual landfall until Monday.
 - Reports of flooding have come in from many residents; Long Beach, Bayview, and Roosevelt are just some of the streets being inundated.

Unlike last year's Irene incident, this is looking like a much more vicious storm.  If you're still down south, it's my strong recommendation to get out if you can find a way.  If you haven't already, and you aren't in an evacuation zone, I'd still suggest you get your valuables to higher ground just in case.  Remember what I said about places located near canals - they are very likely to flood, even if places further south haven't.

Try to make sure you have a fully-charged phone/laptop battery/radio, so you can get the best odds of communication you need.  This goes double if you're one of those who refuses to evacuate.

Sandy Updates: Schools Closed Monday, Mandatory Evacuations

Hello Freeport,

I'm really just echoing what the Freeport School District's website says, here:  There's no school on Monday, including Adult-ed programs.  A determination about Tuesday will be made on Monday.  I have to credit the district administration with having the foresight to let residents (and especially staff) know this far in advance.  It's always a bit of a gamble ordering any sort of closures, in the event that it turns out to be nothing.

Also, speaking oooofffff!

Ed Mangano has ordered mandatory evacuations of anywhere south of Merrick Road in Freeport; and, in general, anywhere 15 feet above sea level.  There are plenty of shelters being set up, and you can look one up in the link.  There's even a pet shelter being set up, which is pretty awesome.

A Short Sandy Update, Preparedness

Hello again, Freeport,

By now you've probably been robo-called and/or seen the Village webpage; all residents south of Atlantic Avenue are being asked to evacuate, and to prepare to protect valuables by moving them to higher ground.

I'd also like to caution anyone who lives near the water (such as the Merrick Avenue/Mill Road/Rec Center area, to start with) to be prepared.  Many residents live near canals, and those are like big "flood me" signs because they'll channel the rising water north.  I also want to add that if you want to stay and "ride it out," whether or not it's on a boat in the middle of the road, that you re-consider if you have children and/or pets.

The MTA is planning for service disruptions, half of our town is predicted to flood, and power-outages (even in Freeport) are possible.

Otherwise, in anticipation, make sure you have your basic supplies:  Flashlights, food, candy bars.  Some residents are cheerfully suggesting Malibu, as well, since it's looking like work is going to be cancelled for most people.  Good for them!  I would also suggest making sure you have enough pet food/kitty litter/pee pads for your furry family members, along with having something to keep the children entertained during the day that does not require electricity.

As the storm gets closer, if anything changes, I'll try to keep the town updated!

Green Party Presidential Candidates Arrested in Hempstead

Hello, Freeporters!

An unexpected development happened today.  You probably know that the Presidential Debates are tonight, and are taking place at Hofstra University right up the road in Hempstead.  As usual, it's a two-party duel between the Republican and Democratic candidates.  Well, as reported by The Raw Story, the Green Party's candidates Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala were in town for the event as they, along with Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, have been avidly protesting the two-party-duopoly on the debate system.  Johnson has even sued to get change the debate commission's stance, as publicized by USNews and others.

Stein and Honkala have upped the ante on this one, however - as you've learned if you clicked the first link, the two were arrested tonight for "disorderly conduct."  Long Island Report has the actual video of the ladies being removed from the area.

So that happened.


Now, here are my completely biased thoughts on this!

If there's one political tack I have taken with The Weekly Freeporter, besides the need for transparency and effective communication at any rate, it's that we are done a major disservice when offered only two candidates to choose from in any election.  When it becomes a question of "Person One" or "Person Two," and there is no third or fourth person, then there is a problem.  For starters, as evidenced by the Commission of Presidential Debates, it is far too easy for two political parties to agree, in light of however much they may "disagree" with one another on actual issues, to exclude the views of any other affiliation.  From the Libertarian to the Green parties, from the Constitution to the Socialist and beyond; all are kept out due to easily manipulated rules and procedures.  Some are clearly unable to win the election, simply due to the lack of ballots they are on, and that's fair enough.

But Stein and Johnson, in particular, are on far more than enough national ballots to win.  When included in those polls (so rarely the ones that determine debate criterion, of course), they have significant followings.  Yet here we stand, with the two strongest unique contenders effectively taken out of the #1 way to draw attention to their ideas.

Oh, the "other side" will tell you not to vote for that third party candidate, anyway.  It's a waste of a vote, they'll never win!  And on the other hand, your vote is so important that if you do vote third-party, you might just let that "other guy" win!  After all, he's to blame for all of the problems with the country!  That, or the other other guy is!  So we can't let the "other guy" win!  If we do, it'll be four (or more, or four more!) years of darkness!  The "other guy" could be Obama as easily as it could Romney, I've heard both sides.  But do you know what I hear every time someone presents me with that argument?

Terrorism.

I've heard people basically try to scare others into voting for whoever they feel is the lesser of two evils, because otherwise you'll get the greater.  Using fear to coerce political results is the textbook definition of terrorism.  "Vote Romney or else you'll drown in Obamacare!"  "Vote Obama or else you'll watch Big Bird get big beheaded!"  It's crap.  Why vote for someone you don't like?  Because of the or else?

Stein and Johnson should be in the debates.  They should be considered serious contenders for the Presidency.  They are fully capable of winning.  And if they do upset "the system" by pulling a Ralph Nader, so what?  "The system," in this case, isn't supposed to be one of only two choices.  George Washington knew that, since he's our only President to this day who was not part of a major party.

So kudos to Stein and Honkala for standing up and demanding to be heard.  Of course, kudos to the lawyers they're gonna hire to get sprung, but hey!  Sometimes, when the voice of the people is rigidly controlled by a system that's out of whack, ya just need to insist that you get a fair shake; and the people who follow you need to advocate for you to those who are considering a third party vote, but are too worried about "the other guy."  All together, there needs to be a statement that three hundred million Americans can't allow for only two choices (Pepsi and Coke) in determining their future.  Otherwise, like I said, you're letting others control you with fear:  You're letting terrorism win.

Mayor Hardwick's, Mr. Ceren's Response to the Ceren Incident

Greetings all!

Today I woke up to discover an e-mail from Mayor Andrew Hardwick, answering some of the questions raised regarding his role in the Salvador Sanchez Ceren incident.  As usual, you can see the screen-shot of the letter below!  Note that, also as usual, I've censored out various advertisements, messengers, and other windows I had open at the time.  It includes an apology toward those offended and an explanation of his circumstances; in general, he seems to deny full knowledge of Mr.  Ceren's history.

The full-text is as follows...

"First, I love my country and I am willing to die for it. As a veteran, and firefighter, my loyalty to serving my village and country is an uncompromising commitment that I’ve sworn to uphold. My intentions are never to dishonor Freeport residents, firemen, police officers, military, and those who have lost loved ones in the 9/11 tragedies. I also lost some of my closest friends on 9/11 and to suggest that I would knowingly participate in anything that would dishonor them is absurd.

If what is being said is true, I sincerely regret that you have been hurt and I humbly ask for your forgiveness. I care for each and every Freeport resident and will continue to acknowledge anyone who feels that I may have overlooked their concerns and move forward to address those concerns with due diligence in best way that I can."

So, I'll let that stand on it's own and, next, jump to a Newsday article (redistributed by the Oklahoma Welcome, for some reason, under the guise of MCT Information Services) by Patrick Whittle highlighting the controversy involved in this incident.  Within the article, Mr.  Whittle cites...

"Ceren, who attended a reception with Long Island Latino leaders in Hempstead on Thursday night, told a reporter that he came to New York this week to try to build dialogue between the U.S. and El Salvador. There are about 100,000 Salvadorans on Long Island, according to the 2010 census. 

Asked about his involvement in anti-American demonstrations, Ceren said through an interpreter he wants to "reaffirm that I am sympathizing with these people" who died on 9/11.

"What has come out of my heart is to give thanks to this wonderful country," he added."

Okay.  Fine.  Grand.  According to my research, which is always welcome to be dis-proven (with proof, not truthiness), this marks the first time that Mr.  Ceren has approached our country in this manner.  Taken generously as an apology for and renunciation of his support for the murderers of American citizens, I'm all in favor of it!  In fact, I'd be totally happy to hear how his rehabilitation is going!

...A year from now, maybe.  Maybe two.

I will always maintain that people have the right to a chance (one) at redemption.  If this "welcome" - protests, angry residents, and reminders of his checkered past - is what it took to get him there, grand.  But I also will maintain that this is a life-long endeavor.  If, a year or so from now, Mr.  Ceren has provided some actions to back up his words, then I'd feel pretty okay.  When, as we all do, Mr.  Ceren is on his way off this world; if he is still aligned with America's interests and has done us some good?  Then so be it!  It can never change his past, and he'll go to his grave with the guilt of his actions both direct and not.

But if he's developed genuine guilt, then that itself is the best service we can provide to honor those who have lost their lives.  The transformation of evil into good is not an easy one by any stretch, but it is the only true victory possible without adding more grave-stones to the world.

Salvador Sanchez Ceren, Terror Supporter; Welcome to Freeport...?

Greetings, Freeport!

I know; distressing headline, isn't it?

First of all, my surgery on Thursday went well.  I'm recovering (fairly) comfortably.  For those who were concerned, thank you!  And on to business.

Today I came across some rather unusual pictures on Facebook.  They were of police officers at Village Hall.  If that doesn't sound unusual, take a look and tell me what's out of line.

Before your head explodes, yes; this officer is wearing the sort of equipment one would imagine in the horrific event of, say a terrorist seizing control of government officials.  This is not street police gear, this is heavy duty stuff.  Naturally, this raised my eyebrows.  From the website Noticia, translated by Google Chrome into English, I learned that the Vice-President of El Salvador, Mr.  Salvador Sanchez Ceren, was visiting Freeport (of all places) on August Sixth to celebrate "Salvadorian-American Day."

At first, one might think, "Wow!  We've made it to the big-time, to earn the attention of a country's Vice President!"  Here is Mr.  Ceren, sitting next to Mayor Hardwick during the festivities!

Who Is Salvador Sanchez Ceren?

A number of residents immediately expressed outrage over Mr.  Ceren's presence, and I have to admit I was confused as to why.  Then I started doing the research, always a long process, and I discovered that Mr.  Ceren is a member of a radical political party called the FMLN (a fact that could be benign); oh, yeah, he's apparently also a huge fan of the September Eleventh Attacks.  I don't mean that he's a fan of the heroes who sacrificed themselves to save lives - I mean he actively and vocally approved the murder of American citizens.

Thanks to the FMLN Blog (last updated in 2009), I came across this video (now shared widely on the internet) of Mr.  Ceren cheering Al Qaeda on:

According to the FMLN blog, Mr.  Ceren had this to say:

"The Frente we participate in this is a march to condemn the situation that the country is in, against dollarization, against privatization"

Not being a native Spanish speaker, I have to admit that at this point in my research, I was still a bit confused.  There's some contrary evidence, for example, where it seems that the man generally disapproves of the attacks.  So it was that I was guided to a 2009 statement by Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-California), who said...

"Four days after 9/11, the FMLN had a march in their capital city to celebrate the 9/11 attack by Al-Qaeda and to burn the American flag.
The leader of that march was Salvador Sanchez Ceren, who today is the  FMLN's candidate for El Salvadoran Vice President."

The Congressman also stated...

 "...its current candidate for Vice President [Ceren], in a pro-Al Qaeda rally where the U.S. flag was burned, this taking place immediately after September 11, 2001. The U.S. Embassy in El Salvador was forced to condemn the written public statements related to the September 11th attacks that were issued by the FMLN and blamed the U.S. for causing itself to be attacked because of its international policies."

Okay; so the Vice-President of El Salvador happens to be a noted supporter of terrorism.  As a man who believes in forgiveness and redemption, I tried to find any hard evidence that he'd renounced terrorism.  I mean, evil isn't permanent, and people who renounce evil can redeem themselves (it's a life-long work, but I believe in such things) and can become genuinely helpful members of society.  I hoped to find some sort of statement from Mr.  Ceren, offered between 9/11/2001 and this week, that he had conquered the evil ways of his past and vowed to live a life of benevolence.  As yet, I haven't.  So far as I can tell, Mr.  Ceren is still a buddy of Al Qaeda's.  That's pretty messed up stuff!

In the past, Ceren's party (The FMLN) was involved in the Salvadorian Civil War as a major combatant; according to Wikipedia, this conflict claimed seventy thousand people (70,000).  Now, this is one of those Latin American "containment" wars that the U.S. was involved in; we supported the military dictatorship of El Salvador even when they committed atrocities.  It wasn't as bad as the fracas in Guatemala (when the U.S. overthrew a democratically elected leader to protect American fruit companies), but we were still complicit.  

However, as in most parties to these type of wars, the FMLN was far from blameless.  For example, it's noted that they used Human shields during the fight in San Salvador.  It is still recognized, as Congressman Rohrabacher points out, as a sponsor of terrorism.  Many Freeporters of Salvadorian descent escaped this civil war, which didn't end until early 1990's.  Many were likely victims of the FMLN.  This history, combined with the lack of a resignation of terrorism, pretty much seals Mr.  Ceren's deal in my eyes.

So here's my two biggest questions:  Why the hell is this man in Freeport; and what's being done about it?

Terrorist Supporter in Freeport, New York

Before I get any further into this article, I need to restate that as a general principle The Weekly Freeporter is a non-partisan publication.  There's no Democrat, Republican, Home Rule, Communist, or Pastafarian alignments, here.  In fact, whatever my personal biases are, or whatever my colleagues believe, we focus on reporting only the facts of a case.  We leave the decision making up to our readers on political issues.

This is not a political issue.  This is an issue of "what the fuck is a guy like this doing in our town, rubbing elbows with -anyone-, let alone Mayor Hardwick?"

I immediately searched the Village webpage for any announcer from the Mayor or the Board of Trustees on this issue.  With all the firepower needed to protect a foreign head of state, surely the folks in charge knew in advance that this man was coming to town.  How -exactly- is it that not one scrap of information can be found on the Village webpage?  How is it that I can search for information on Google and find only a relatively small Spanish-language publication's announcement that Mr.  Ceren would be in town?  What, was Newsday asleep?

I could understand if Mayor Hardwick was informed by, let's say for the sake of argument, the State Department that this guy was coming to town.  I could understand if he wasn't given a choice in the matter.  Foreign dignitaries could easily be "asked" to visit certain municipalities, and those municipalities might have very little control over whether that happens.  So maybe Mayor Hardwick wasn't given a say in this matter.  Fair enough.  I would have loved to see a press release from his (still absolutely anemic, without-evidence-of-existence) public relations department saying, for instance...

"Hey, this is Mayor Hardwick.  So, there's this Vice President of El Salvador with a really sketchy past coming to town.  I'm not comfortable with it, but since this is the situation, here are my feelings and here's what we plan to do."  You know, not exact words, but something to that effect.

I would respect a Mayor who, in a situation he doesn't like, takes the initiative and engages with the public on possible controversy.  I'd honestly have cheered on Mayor Hardwick if he announced, in advance, that this situation was coming up.  The dude didn't step off the plane at the Freeport Airport and demand a news conference in the same day!  Assuming our Mayor had concerns with this visit, he should have laid them bare well before Mr.  Ceren made it to town.

But maybe this wasn't an imposition.  Even if he was actively welcoming Mr.  Ceren, as a gesture of forgiving the past or of some other grand ploy to break the man's support of evil, shouldn't it have been obvious that his presence would be controversial?  Following this, shouldn't our Mayor have prepared some kind of defense of his viewpoint?  Why was this man being welcomed into town?

Instead, we residents find out about this visit only when our all-too-honorable police officers are seen toting assault rifles and decked out in full combat gear, ordered to protect a man who a decade ago would have been happy to see them die.  Let me ask a simple fucking question:
How do you think they feel?

I ask this to every reader, but especially to Mayor Hardwick - How do you think the police officers guarding Mr.  Ceren, the fire fighters on call in case of emergency, the EMTs and Paramedics providing relief to public events, and other heroes of this Village feel to see you sitting elbow-to-elbow with a man who cheered while the twin towers fell?  Who marched in appreciation while their friends and family died?  This is a man who was getting his jollies at American deaths - at the deaths of Freeporters, actually.  How do you think they feel having to stand around and take care of an unrepentant supporter of terrorism?

Honestly, this isn't a political jab.  The lack of preparation and responsibility on display here demands - and deserves - explanation.  It's my hope that we'll get it.  It's the law of probability that we will not.  It's simple fact that, yes, there will be consequences to this.  One way or another, there will be consequences.

Your public relations department is a complete catastrophe.  That's nothing new, but the fact that it hasn't been fixed throughout your tenure rests solely on your shoulders.  As a result of this (to be polite) ineptitude, whether you realize it or not, you've just been part of a welcoming event for a supporter of terrorism who's Al Qaeda Fan Club card is still valid, Mr.  Salvador Sanchez Ceren.  If you did not know this, or if you had no control over this event, then you failed completely in your duty to apprehend a given situation and explain it to the residents of your town.  If you did realize it, and you were willingly a part of it, then clearly you are out of touch with the residents you work for.

Why was Salvador Sanchez Ceren in our town?  Were you aware of his history as a supporter of terrorism during your event with him? Do you have any information which leads you to believe he has renounced it?  Did you welcome Mr.  Ceren willingly, or were you made to welcome him against your will?

Earthquake Follow-up!

Howdy, Freeporters!

So, there's mostly good news to report, here. Manhattan was shook pretty bad, it seems, but we didn't get that terrible a burden of it, here. No major damage or casualties have been reported nation-wide, though there are always some bits of structural damage in an earthquake. There are no reported expectations of after-shocks and, especially crucial for Freeport, there are no tsunami warnings. Whew!

Other than that, though, there are some things that we could use some work on for future quakes. While I'm not a huge fan of going this route, I'm compelled to link to a post I've made for Liberty Free Media. Check out the full article at this link!
