Update:  Sadly, Mr. Jones was found having passed from this life at Milburn Pond.

Our deepest condolences to his family, including his parents, child, and siblings.

I hope this time of year is going well for all of us.

Unfortunately, I'm dusting this tome off for a reason, today; to draw what little attention I can to the below photo, taken from my old friend Allison - the missing man's sister.

The search is still ongoing, and unfortunately that's all we really have to share at this time.  Hopefully, Mr. Jones is located safe and sound!  But, if YOU happen to have information, remember that any call to the police will be kept anonymous.

If you have any information at all, please - let's try to help this family out!

TWF 294: Heat Warning for 7/18/2019 & Weekend

Hello, Freeporters!

Very quickly, Freeport Fire Department has posted a notice for a heat advisory at least through this weekend.

I just want to add, "DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN AN UN-AIRCONDITIONED CAR!!!!"  It's way too damn hot, they will literally die, and you will deserve the jail time.

Additionally, I've found WAY TOO FEW Freeport and Nassau-County related officials offering input on how to handle the heat, however, Anna Kaplan (NYS Senate, District 7) in this case deserves significant credit for putting out this release with a list of cooling centers.  They're not exactly Freeport-centric (except maybe for VOF's emergency management page), but, hey, since apparently Port isn't offering much besides words, if you need a safe place, here's Senator Kaplan's list:

TWF 293: Airport Ailments As Callouts Force Delays At LaGuardia, Others!

Hello, Freeport,

The Federal Government shut-down, which President Donald Trump proudly took credit for on December 11, 2018, has netted another nuisance for all Americans - but this one especially impacts Long Islanders.  As Think Progress and many other outlets report, staffing shortages for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs), who have been working without pay for about a month, much like Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers, the FBI and many others.

We won't get into the specifics of the shut-down here, except to reiterate that the President has taken full credit for it, and - of course - to remind you that Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, has control over whether or not the Senate votes on any bills the House of Representatives passes; he has repeatedly blocked votes to re-open the government.  (By the way, Constitutionally, even if the Senate voted on and passed a bill, President Trump would have ten days to sign or Veto it; if he didn't sign it, it would still become law, thus the Senate has every reason to vote and send a bill to the President's desk - especially as the Senate voted strongly in favor of the same thing in the 2018 Congress.)

Here's some things to expect:

 - Flight delays and possibly cancellations.

 - Massive traffic jams as a result of these delays.

 - MASSIVE traffic jams as a result of these delays, since these delays often lead to secondary accidents.

 - Possible difficulties with shipping merchandise, if the ATCs have to delay, redirect, or flat-out ground UPS, FEDEX, or other planes.

 - The possibility that this will expand and get worse, rather than improving.

TWF 292: The Weekly Freeporter in 2019!

Greetings, friendly readers!

I hope you are all enjoying the new year, so far, and that the holiday season has rolled over into a great time for you all.  Allow me to take you back to 2010.  While that mission statement still holds (Although I've had the extraordinary pleasure of working with others on this effort!  If you'd like a shout-out to what you do, please feel free to let me know and it's done!), the truth remains that The Weekly Freeporter is not slated to return to full, weekly publication.

The main purpose of The Weekly Freeporter since its professional retirement as a regular publication in 2015 has been to, in a very limited way, provide the following efforts, when possible:

 - A signal-boost for people looking for help with solving crimes.
 - A signal boost for people looking for help with finding pets.
 - A signal boost for charities hosting benefits.
 - A signal boost for official government events.
 - A source of information in the event of weather emergencies.
 - An occasional source of critique for significant news developments and acts of gross, public dishonor.



In 2019, I intend to maintain very much the same distant, occasionally-commenting approach.  To be honest, this is mainly a business decision:  The Weekly Freeporter is patched into Google's Adsense program, but in all sincerity this publication has yet to pay for the hand-held tape recorder I bought for board meetings and interviews back in 2010.  Very simply, "I need to have a real job, and this alone is not viable."


However, maybe there's a way you can help!

I oftentimes get notifications that people are interested in posting events on either The Weekly Freeporter's  Facebook 'page' or 'group,' since both are different things.  Many of these things fit the above categories, but every so often someone will actually be trying to promote their businesses.  Perhaps they're having a sale?  Perhaps they're hosting an event?  At any rate, these are people with for-profit ventures who want to be successful, and I think that's great!

However, since my writing is my for-profit venture (Amazon Author Page), I would instead be open to a "Sponsorship" system.  If you are interested in sponsoring a The Weekly Freeporter article, I am personally available on Twitter, as well as through the two Facebook groups I listed in the previous paragraph.  I cite Editorial Freelance Association rates for research, so if you want to sponsor a relatively simple article that would be a bit different than sponsoring a larger project, and/or sponsoring multiple articles.  It goes without saying that I will consult you on the content of the article/project, but I retain all creative authority.

I can think of at least one project I would very strongly love to see sponsored, but cannot execute independently because of how in-depth it would be.  It's the kind of project that I think you would agree would help a lot of marginalized people, including in Freeport, and would follow up on some of my prior research done for this article (which actually followed up on this one) about school taxes.  Suffice to say, there are a lot of inequities on Long Island and I would love the chance to do research and get to the bottom of it, but I'd need sufficient backing.
